Thoughts on moving…..
I was on the computer the other day, and I decided to got to Wikipedia and see what they had to say about moving companies. The article included some history and explanation of what we do in as far as the actual moving is concerned, but there is so much more you should expect out of a good, reliable moving company in Illinois. For instance, will your mover arrange for a cleaning service at your request? Will they take care of rubbish removal after the move? How will your mover handle any special requests you may have? Full service movers in Illinois run the gamut in the services they provide, but if you think that you are going to have special requests above and beyond the actual physical moving of your home, make sure your provider can offer these arrangements as options. At Stevenson Transfer we are able to handle almost any special request and arrange it as part of your estimate. Don’t be afraid to ask, making your move as trouble-free as possible is as much a part of my job as getting the move completed. I have even been asked to provide weather forecasts for the destination as part of the package, and I am happy to do it. Whatever you may need, just ask, and we will be happy to try to make all of the arrangements for you. See you next time here on the web!

Moving tip of the Week – 4/14/2010
Recently a friend moved cross-country for a professional relocation. He had to pay for the move himself so saving as much money on the move as he could was vital. He got bids from several large national van lines, Mayflower included, as well as estimates from some online movers with names that were very ambiguous. Needless to say, he went with an online mover who refused an on-site survey but offered their low price as compensation.
Here’s how that worked out:
- The mover did not get all of the required street permits and was late in unloading as a result ( this should be the resposibility of the mover unless stated otherwise in advance)
- argued with the customer regarding the loading and unloading situation and the tardiness on both ends (past the promised dates)
- has to this penning refused to address any claims by the shipper
- is not acknowledging damage incurred during transit
- and, this is the big one for me, showed up late to the shippers home after all of the arguing with a helper that he had picked up off the street!
I don’t know about you, but if anyone is going to be in my home, carrying my things, I sure want to know that that person has been checked out first! That’s why Mayflower and Stevenson are both so rigid in their background checks and drug testing for all employees, regardless of their job title.
But, the bigger message of the story needs to be this: in a service industry, almost always you will get what you pay for. That broker online or on the phone who will not give you a survey but will give you a great price has only their commission in mind — NOT the safety of your belongings and your happiness with the job! they will get their piece of the action out of the deposit that they will undoubtedly make you pay, and will most likely be less-than-enthused about addressing your concerns after the fact.
All van lines, especially Mayflower, strive to remain as competitive as possible. The one thing to remember when comparing estimates is that those of us who are legitimate and licensed, insured and bonded, may have a little higher estimate than the invisible face on the other end of the line, but aren’t your personal belongings and the safety of your home worth it? Think about that before you make your decision as to who will protect your household goods this season when you move. Our record stands for itself…102 years of family owned-and-operated experience puts Stevenson Mayflower ahead of the rest! I will see you next time for the moving tip of the week!

Moving Tip of the Week – 04/01/2010
Hello again! Usually, I will give tips and advice in a Q & A format, but this week I am going to deviate a little bit. As of this penning, the temperatures are in the 80′s just off the Chicago lakefront and throughout the southwest suburbs, and baseball season is right around the corner. In our industry, this also means that moving season is drawing nigh and I always like to take a moment to stress to potential customers, be they local, intrastate or interstate, that this is the time when you should start contacting movers if you are planning a relocation during the coming summer.
Many movers have plenty of room on the schedule right now, but come early June, that all changes very rapidly. I remember one point last summer that we had our movers loading 5 interstate jobs all at once in Plainfield, Joliet, Shorewood, Naperville and Aurora…on the same day, going different directions throughout the United States. While we are able to handle moves of that size and scope, it was detrimental to those who may have called to book a move with us for the same time on short notice…there simply would not have been crews available. Therefore, I will always suggest you start the planning process now, as the sooner you get a move on the books, the better quality job you will recieve as a result. More time to plan means more attention to detail!
We just attended a workshop at Mayflower headquarters in St. Louis, and they are beginning to gear up for a busy season. We also anticipate a busy summer here in the Chicago area and in the interest of providing the best service possible, please contact your movers in advance, the first in your list being Stevenson Transfer, agent for Mayflower Transit! I will be back soon for the next moving tip of the week!
